The second project evolves around gathering information on the dynamics and structure of the political elites of China. Who are the powerful players, how does their power change over time, and what are the social and patronage networks between those players? We do this by selecting a subset of our list of experts, and sending them a monthly survey to rank political actors and answer a set of questions around networks and likely events in China.
Systematic tracing of political elites on a monthly basis has, to the best of our knowledge, only been done in Russia and the Ukraine (see Baturo & Elkink 2014). Our data provides unique tools to improve the quantitative and qualitative study of the political elites in China, applying "The New Kremlinology" (Baturo & Elkink 2021) to the Chinese case.
